The Office Holiday Party Is Getting a Makeover. Here's What Employees Actually Want.
Let's talk about the company holiday party.

For years, the formula was pretty predictable. Book a function room. Put out a buffet. Add a DJ, an open bar, and maybe a speech from the boss. Everyone shows up, makes small talk with accounting, and heads home with a centerpiece someone insisted they take.
And listen, there's nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned holiday party. We love a reason to get dressed up, have a cocktail, and celebrate.
But the way people work has changed. And the way companies celebrate should probably catch up.
Between hybrid schedules, remote teams, packed calendars, and employees who genuinely value their time outside of work, the company holiday party has a different job these days.
It's not just about throwing a party. It's about giving people a reason to want to be there.
Yes, Employees Still Want to Celebrate. Just Maybe Not the Way You Think.
Despite what you might hear about people avoiding office social events, the holiday party isn't going anywhere.
According to ezCater's 2025 Workplace Holiday Party Trends Report, 82% of surveyed employees planned to attend their company holiday party, and 83% said these celebrations help them build friendships and connections with coworkers.
That's pretty encouraging.
Especially when you consider how many people spend their workdays communicating through screens, email threads, and meetings that probably could have been emails.
People still want to connect. They just want it to feel natural.
And that brings us to what makes a holiday party worth attending.
1. Good Food and Drinks. Please Don't Overcomplicate This.
People have opinions about food. Strong ones.
In that same ezCater survey, 77% of employees said food was the party perk they looked forward to most, and half said food and drink options influenced whether they'd attend.
So yes, your menu matters.
You don't necessarily need a five-course dinner. Great appetizers, food stations, a really good caterer, and drinks people are excited about can go a long way.
And about those drinks...
We're big believers that the bar should be part of the experience, not a folding table in the corner with a few bottles of wine and a cooler of beer.
Think seasonal cocktails, a thoughtfully designed bar, professional bartenders who actually enjoy talking to people, and equally good nonalcoholic options.
A beautiful bar also gives people a natural place to gather. You'd be surprised how many good conversations start while someone is waiting for a cocktail.
2. Less Forced Fun. More Actual Fun.
Can we retire mandatory team-building games from holiday parties?
You've spent the entire year working together. Nobody needs to demonstrate their commitment to company culture through a competitive holiday trivia tournament unless they genuinely want to.
The best celebrations give people room to enjoy themselves.
Live music. A fun photo setup. A cocktail-making experience. Great food. Comfortable places to sit and catch up.
Give people something interesting to do, but don't make every minute of the evening an organized activity.
The idea isn't to pack the schedule. It's to create an atmosphere where people can have a good time without being told how.
3. A Party That Respects People's Time
Here's something worth considering before you book a Saturday night in December.
Your employees have lives outside of work.
They have families, friends, holiday shopping, travel plans, and approximately 400 other things competing for their attention this time of year.
In ezCater's survey, 53% of employees preferred a celebration during working hours, while 62% favored a casual dress code.
That doesn't mean you should cancel the evening party. It means you should think about who's coming.
A Friday afternoon celebration with great food, cocktails, music, and an early finish might be exactly what your team would appreciate.
Or perhaps your crew loves a reason to dress up and have a big night out.
Ask them.
A quick employee poll can save you a lot of guesswork and help you spend your budget on things people actually care about.
4. You Don't Need a Big Venue to Throw a Great Party

Not every company needs a ballroom, a formal dinner, or a huge holiday production.
Some of the best celebrations happen right in the office, at a favorite local venue, or in a private event space. With the right food, drinks, music, and a little atmosphere, you can turn an everyday space into somewhere people actually want to hang out.
And this is where we get excited about our beverage carts.
Our vintage mobile bars will soon be tucked away for their winter naps (they've earned it), but our beautiful beverage carts are ready to party indoors all winter long.
They're a great fit for corporate holiday parties, office celebrations, employee appreciation events, and smaller gatherings where you want the full Decanted experience without bringing in an entire mobile bar.
You still get the beautiful setup, professional bartenders, thoughtfully crafted cocktails, and all the personality we're known for.
And because the carts have a smaller footprint, they can work beautifully in offices and indoor event spaces.
Who says you need to leave the building to throw a party worth attending?
5. Great Nonalcoholic Drinks Are No Longer an Afterthought
Not everyone drinks alcohol. And not everyone who drinks wants to drink at a work event.
That shouldn't mean their only choices are water, soda, or something poured from a plastic bottle.
A thoughtfully made zero-proof cocktail can be just as festive as its boozy counterpart.
Fresh ingredients, seasonal flavors, beautiful garnishes, and a proper glass make a difference.
It's a small detail that says a lot about how you've considered your guests.
And when you're hosting a company event, making everyone feel comfortable and included should be part of the plan.
6. A Genuine Thank-You Goes Further Than Another Speech
We understand the temptation to use the holiday party to recap the year's numbers, recognize achievements, and talk about the exciting goals ahead.
And there's absolutely a place for celebrating what your team accomplished.
But your employees have probably sat through enough presentations this year.
Keep the speeches short. Make the recognition meaningful. Thank the people who made the year happen.
Then let them enjoy the party.
The holidays are a chance to celebrate your people, not give them one more meeting to attend.
Planning a Corporate Holiday Party in Massachusetts or Connecticut?
We love a good holiday party. And we know the person responsible for planning it usually has about 75 other things on their plate.
That's where we come in.
Our Decanted beverage carts bring a fully staffed, beautifully styled bar experience right into your office or indoor event space. From festive signature cocktails to elevated nonalcoholic options, we help make the drinks one less thing you need to worry about.
Whether you're hosting an afternoon celebration for your team or a full-blown holiday bash, we'll help you find the right setup for your space and your guests.
And yes, we take our cocktails seriously. We just don't think the party needs to take itself too seriously.
The company holiday party doesn't need to be bigger, fancier, or more expensive to be better.
It needs good people, great hospitality, and a little thought about what your team would actually enjoy.
And preferably, nobody being forced to sing karaoke with their boss.
Your team deserves a great holiday party. You deserve to actually enjoy it.
